Copenhagen's new IKEA City opens with spectacular view

The new IKEA city store is now open. Departing from the classic blue and yellow IKEA, the Copenhagen city store its adapted its urban context and the way Copenhageners live in and use the city. Twenty meters above the street, a green rooftop garden offers a respite from the bustle in an otherwise hectic junction near the main train station, the historic Meatpacking district, and the inner-city harbour.

“Our most important task has been to integrate the large building volume centrally in Copenhagen right next to a traffic hub so it adds value to its surrounding. We envisioned a building that despite its considerable size and extremely busy location offers an escape from the commotion while remaining outward facing. The curved silhouette and refined façade expression creates a clear visual quality, and the several layers of public space will benefit everyone in the city. We now look forward seeing how people will make use of these unique spaces in the years to come,” says Noel Justesen Wibrand, Partner and Head of Sustainable Innovation at Dorte Mandrup.

The landscape design is crafted by 1:1 Landscape and consists exclusively of native tress, shrubs, and grasses matching the conditions of the wind, sun, and shade.

We look forward sharing more soon.
