“Stunning”! This was the initial response from the jury seeing Ilulissat Icefjord Centre. On Friday 23 June, both Ilulissat Icefjord Centre and The Whale were both celebrated in Toronto as winners in their categories at the Canadian AZ Awards 2023.

Ilulissat Icefjord Centre took home first place in the category ‘Buildings Over 1.000 SQM’ while the Whale was granted first place in the category ‘Ideas, Prototypes and Unbuilt Projects’:

“What is especially powerful about this project is the visceral response it elicits – particularly in how it poetically weaves together human habitation with the landscape and our non-human relations in a kind of material and formal dance,” said juror David Fortin about The Whale.

The AZ Award is AZURE’s international architecture award, recognising excellence and innovation.
