Cohousing is a Danish invention! Not surprisingly, the original concept of transgressing traditional ways of living came to life in the 1960’s. While hard lessons have been learned about the limits to family experimentation, the concept of sharing spaces and everyday life lives on! With Lange Eng Cohousing Community, Dorte Mandrup has designed the largest of its kind in Denmark.

Prioritizing the common spaces and the community of families living here, the building was designed as a typical Danish block, surrounding a large common green garden.

The outer perimeter of the block towards the forest is relatively closed-off with the facade and the roof clad in identical material, whereas the building towards the garden appears light and open.

Every housing unit has access to the shared garden space, and terraces along the facades offer a convenient platform for bringing life from the homes into the common space.
