The residential area known as Sønderparken in Fredericia was long in need of renovation and a pair of caring, helping hands. Dorte Mandrup took part in the over-all improvement process of the neighbourhood in establishing an Activity Centre. The local residents acted as consultants and had a large say in the planning process of various facilities. Dorte Mandrup has given the centre a great deal of care and attention by designing special features such as bookshelves, reading lamps and a cozy bamboo corner, lovingly nicknamed “the kissing corner”!

The house provides the framework for the residents’ future social activities and functions as a focal social point, offering space for different needs and preferences regardless of culture or age.
A flexible interior ensures that the communal house is able to accommodate a wide range of activities such as knitting clubs, sports activities, homework and larger social events. The flexibility of the building is expressed by its overall connectivity that contains smaller spaces and recesses, creating the possibility to meet many different user-needs at the same time.
The activity house is built into an artificial hill and provides outdoor spaces on different levels, each with direct access to the building.
